Wait until the leaves are genuinely down — late November in most of South Surrey — and you get one cleaning that holds through the wettest stretch of the year.
The spring cleaning matters for a different reason. Over the winter, moss establishes in gutters and downspouts, and in our climate it grows well enough to form a dense plug. Clearing it in March means the system runs freely through the spring rain.

No. Gutter guards reduce how much leaf litter gets in and can genuinely stretch the interval, but they do not eliminate maintenance. Fine debris — cedar needles, seeds, roof grit, and the moss that thrives here — passes through or accumulates on top of the guard, and a guard covered in a mat of wet needles sheds water off the roof edge entirely. Guarded gutters on a treed Metro Vancouver property still want inspecting once a year.
Safety
Most gutter-cleaning injuries are ladder falls, and wet moss-covered roofs in the Lower Mainland are genuinely hazardous. If your home is more than a single storey, or the roof pitch is steep, or the ground under the ladder is soft and wet, this is not a good DIY job.
